Excavations carried out in the Mullivaikkal area of Mullaitivu, with the aim of finding a stock of weapons and gold buried by the LTTE, were halted on Wednesday (27) on the orders of the Mullaitivu Magistrate.

The Mullaitivu Police and Security Forces dug a hole 4.7 metres deep and 17 metres wide at that place, based on information given by a former member of the LTTE, but nothing was found.

At this time although the Mullaitivu Magistrate T. Pradeepan ordered that the excavations be stopped, the LTTE member requested through the police to allow the digging to continue for another hour at the site, stating strongly that there are weapons and gold at the site.

The Magistrate gave permission to dig for an additional hour and at the end of that hour, nothing was found, and as a result, the Magistrate ordered for the second time to close the pit and stop the excavation. Accordingly, the excavation work at that place has been completed.

The Mullaitivu Police stated that there had been six cases of people from the south and from these areas digging pits and attempting to recover gold, allegedly buried by LTTE members, and all six groups had been arrested by the police.
