Former President Maithripala Sirisena has requested Rs.1 billion from Minister Mahinda Amaraweera through a Letter of Demand (LoD) against some defamatory remarks which is said to have been made by Minister Amaraweera during a press conference held on April 22. Sending the Letter of Demand through attorney Jayamuditha Jayasuriya yesterday, the former President has requested the Minister to pay the requested amount as damages within 14 days from the issuance of the LoD. Otherwise, legal action will be taken against him.
The former President quoting Minister Amaraweera has pointed out the Minister has mentioned during the said press conference that the former President had conducted a particular meeting of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) together with a group of loiterers and it is illegal. By conducting that meeting the former President had insulted the court. In addition, the Minister had also mentioned that the former President is planning to auction the SLFP on a deal of Rs.100 million to a well-known businessman of the country. Accordingly, it has been mentioned in the LoD that through the particular remarks Minister Amaraweera has tarnished the image of Maithripala Sirisena, who has been engaging in active politics for the past 50 years and also has held the Executive Presidency of the Republic and also the Chairmanship of the SLFP.
The Lawyer has pointed out that her client has not requested money from any person as mentioned by Minister Amaraweera and also has not been convicted for any corruption case during his political career.
Knowing the truth, the Minister has made these hateful remarks purposely and it caused damage to her client, the lawyer has further mentioned in the LoD.
