Man gets 13 years sentence for stabbing wife

A husband who tried to kill his wife who was a Gramasewa Officer, with a knife has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. The Hambantota High Court judge yesterday (22) sentenced a 33-year-old father of two who was found guilty of stabbing his wife to death with a knife, five years ago in Weerawila, to 13 years of imprisonment with hard labour and Rs.10,000 fine.

Maha Marakkalage Shashi Sahan Pathum (33), a resident of Tissa Road, Weerawila was sentenced to prison.

A long-standing family dispute between the accused person and his wife had escalated and on 26.12.2018, the accused had tried to kill his wife, using a knife, in the presence of Police officers who had come to resolve the dispute at the house of the accused person at Tissa Road, Weerawila.

The police officers and the people around had brought the situation under control and the accused’s wife, 31-year-old Nadeeka Lakmali, who was the Grama Niladhari officer of Tissamaharama Sadunagama, who was seriously injured in the stabbing by the accused, had been admitted to the Hambantota General Hospital for treatment.Weerawila police officers had arrested the individual then and there and subsequent to producing him before the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court, and a preliminary hearing, the Attorney General had filed charges of attempted murder. During the trial held, the prosecution managed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the charge against the accused. Subsequently, the Hambantota High Court Judge who convicted the accused of the relevant charge sentenced the accused to thirteen years rigorous imprisonment. A fine of Rs.10,000 was imposed he would be sentenced to another year if he defaults. State Counsel Anuradha Wijesurendra led the complaint on behalf of the Attorney General.
