Media should empower citizens with knowledge and awareness of Parliament – Ajith Rajapaksa

Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa recently stressed the importance of increasing public awareness of Parliament saying that it would help to show how Parliament and politics can be relevant to citizens’ lives.

The Deputy Speaker said that very few of the community groups and individuals aware of the role of the parliament, how it works, the role of MPs, and ways in which the public can engage with Parliament.

The Deputy Speaker said that the media has to play a key role in this regard by increasing public awareness and participation in the work of the Parliament and also to empower citizens with knowledge and information on important issues and parliamentary decisions.

He further said that although many important acts have been passed for the progress of the country and the society, there is no understanding in the society about these matters and it is time for the media institutions to pay attention to whether the MPs are fulfilling their responsibility properly.

The Deputy Speaker said that the main reason for this situation is that the media focuses only about the happenings in the Parliament without creating a broad dialogue about the important facts, statistics, new legislation, regulations and other decrees in the debates of the Parliament and how they affect the country, the society and the general public of the country.
