Mervyn arrested by CID over 2007 SLRC walk-in, released

Former Minister Mervyn Silva, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was released without bail by the Colombo Additional Magistrate Kheminda Perera yesterday.

The Magistrate observed that it was not necessary to set bail for the suspect.The Magistrate further stated it would be sufficient for the suspect to appear before Court on November 16.

The Criminal Investigations Department informed the Magistrate that former Minister Mervyn Silva was arrested following advice given by the Attorney General.

Former Minister Mervyn Silva has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department today in connection with forcibly entering Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) in 2007.

Attorney Prasad Silva appearing on behalf of the Mervyn Silva said that his client went to the Criminal Investigations Department following the notice issued by CID and then his client came to know that there was a complaint against him.

The Counsel stated that his 75-year-old client is a sick person and there is no need to hide as he is a social worker. He also requested the Magistrate to release him on a suitable bail.
