School food programme to get Rs. 110 per child
The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for a proposal submitted by the Education Minister Susil Premajayantha to increase the amount spent for a meal for a student in the ‘School Food Programme’ up to Rs. 110 and to implement the ‘School Food Programme’ for 170 days in 2024 for students in the primary sections. The ‘School Food Programme’ is implemented in 7,902 schools belonging to 100 educational zones covering 1.08 million students. Rs. 85 is spent per day for a meal for one student.
The committee of officers to study into this matter has reported that Rs.110 is at least spent for a child’s meal as a result of the price fluctuation. The Save the Children organization has agreed to provide three items of food to 200,000 students in 917 selected schools for 2024 under the ‘School Food Programme’.
