The Education Ministry has taken action by directing the relevant authorities to conduct an investigation into the tragic incident where a primary student was killed and several other students were injured after a wall at a school in Wellampitiya collapsed on a group of students on Wednesday (15).
A Grade one female student aged six years died while five other students were injured after a wall of a school in Wellampitiya collapsed on them while they were washing their hands from the taps fixed on the collapsed wall on Wednesday (15).
Education Minister Dr.Susil Premajayantha has instructed the officials of the Zonal Education Office to carry out an immediate investigation regarding the incident and to provide an immediate report on the findings.
The Jayawardenapura Zonal Education Office spokesperson said that they will be launching an investigation regarding the incident by visiting the school. Another five students were rushed to the Colombo National Hospital, while one other student was admitted to the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital in Colombo.
One of the five students receiving treatment at the National Hospital is in critical condition according to the latest update by hospital sources, and the student who was admitted to the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital has apparently not sustained serious injuries.
Following this incident after the death of the young schoolgirl due to the wall collapse, a group of local residents in the area had attacked and assaulted the principal of the school and he had got himself admitted in hospital for treatment.
Due to the unrest that precipitated after the incident, the school academic activities have been temporarily suspended and scheduled to recommence on next Monday (20).
The post-mortem examination regarding the death of this student was conducted yesterday (16) at the Colombo JMO’s Office. The Police Media spokesperson office stated that the cause of death was determined as due to serious injuries to the head.
