Misuse of digital technology has caused many social problems including child abuse- Dr. Susil Premajayantha

Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that even in many developed countries of the world, Internet use is implemented with regulation, and misuse of digital technology has caused many social problems including child abuse. The minister expressed these views while participating in a programme organized in commemoration of the occasion of the Child Abuse Prevention Day, which was held on November 19.

In the face of ever-increasing socio-economic problems, the current society is in a non-stop competition, and because the nature of competition is to strive for achievement, we find a generation under mental pressure and stress, so it is essential to pay more attention to the field of psychiatry in future training programmes, the Minister further pointed out here.

The Minister also pointed out that there are many officials at root level to identify social problems that arise at regional level in Sri Lanka and to take steps to provide solutions to them. 331 Divisional Secretariat Divisions and 25 District Development Committees hold monthly development committee meetings and through these, a great deal of intervention can be done for these problems. It was mentioned that problems such as injustice, abuse, and drug addiction where children are concerned are problems within the family corporation, children’s isolation, parental disputes, lack of attention to children and illiteracy have had an impact and necessary measures should be taken by conducting further surveys in this regard.

Also, the Minister stated that some people argue that it is inappropriate to introduce sex education in schools, and that it should be included in the school curriculum in a more appropriate manner, and said that attention has been paid to it in the upcoming education reform measures.

State Minister Geetha Kumarasinghe, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshbandu Tennakoon and a large number of school teachers, students, parents, Police officers and civil Defence officers attended this event.
