Moratuwa University Badminton men’s team led by Bhagya Ranasinghe emerged champions at the 14th Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) concluded at Eastern University Batticolo on last Friday.
It was a fine team effort by Moratuwa shutters when they defeated Kelaniya University team by 3-1 at the final to clinch the title.
The skipper Bhagya Ranasinghe the former Trinitian who also the President of Sports Council said Mora Badminton Team recreated history as we beat Kelaniya University at the inaugural SLUG championship finals in 1980.
It’s been 7 long years since our last SLUG championship win in 2016. Our university hasn’t won an inter-university championship since 2018, and this win feels like a celebration of all the hard work and dedication we’ve put in added skipper Bhagya Ranasinghe. Moratuwa University Sports Director Lukshman Wijesuriya who is the President of Sri Lanka chess Federation gave good support to Mora players to get all success.
Ruchira Wijayasena (V.Capt), Vinul Fernando, Tharindu Ambegoda, Vinuga Jayawardane, Hevindu Tilakasena Yasira Punsith, Chathura Gunawardena included in the champion Mora Badminton team.
Mora players did extremely well in this meet as they clinched overall runner-up title of this meet. Apart from men’s badminton championship they won men’s and women’s Table Tennis championships.
University Grants Commission Chairmen Prof Sampath Amarathunga was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.
