MP Raheem suspended from House Committees

The resolution brought by the Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, for the suspension of representing Committees of Parliament by MP Ali Sabry Raheem was approved yesterday (22) .

Presenting the motion, the Opposition Leader mentioned that the illegal act of misconduct committed by Puttalam district MP Ali Sabry Raheem has been referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges of Parliament for an investigation at present, and the involvement of the MP in Parliament Committees will create an unhealthy situation in relation to the conduct of Members of Parliament. MP Ali Sabry Raheem should not represent the Committees of Parliament until the said investigation is over.

The resolution brought by the Opposition Leader was approved after the Chief Opposition Whip, MP Lakshman Kiriella seconded it.

The Opposition Leader also said that a fine of only Rs.7.5 Mn was charged from the MP who illegally brought 3.3kg of gold worth Rs.74 m and 41 smart phones worth Rs.4.2 million, but a fine of Rs.70 million was charged from a Frenchman who brought a stock of gold worth Rs.80 million. He said that an investigation should be carried out on imposing a lenient fine on the MP.
