“It is wrong to accuse the President when he is not in this House at the moment regarding the re-appointment of Inspector General of Police,” SLPP MP Nimal Lanza said.
I urged these MPs to withdraw their statements accusing the President. The President has sent the name to the Constitutional Council to grant three-week service extension to the Inspector General of Police.
The Constitutional Council had taken an undivided decision at its meeting yesterday to reject the third tenure extension granted to C. D. Wickramaratne due to some law and regulations. Then the President had an opportunity to send name again to the Constitutional Council.
The (CC) decision is controversial since it was done at a time when both the President as the Defence Minister and Public Security Minister Tiran Alles were out of the country.
He said that the Opposition should not undermine the President’s current visit to China as he will engage in several important meetings with regard to the debt restructuring and investment promotion.
