Due to the activities of a very few people, the public does not have a good image of public service, stated Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister President’s Counsel, Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
Minister Rajapakshe expressed these views while attending a ceremony held at the Justice Ministry on Wednesday (27) for the awarding of office worker appointment letters to 18 multi-tasking assistants who were hired under the Department of Multi-purpose Development Task Force and worked under the Justice Ministry.
A total of 508 multi-purpose assistants who were recruited under the Multi-purpose Development Department and worked under the Justice Ministry were recruited in three stages as office assistants for the Ministry and institutions under the Ministry.
Speaking on the occasion to the new recruits, Minister Rajapakshe further said that due to the activities of a minority group of people employed in public service, the state employment sector does not have a good image and reputation. Therefore, it is the duty and responsibility of the newly recruited individuals to build a respectable image about the public service through dedication, commitment and hard work.
Due to the current economic crisis, recruitments are not being made for government services. But the new recruits have been hired to perform essential duties.
Therefore, as a respectable public servant, the new recruits are requested to continue providing the services to the people by the institutions under the Justice Ministry in a good and efficient manner and to move up in the public service, the Minister said.
State Minister of Justice and Prison Affairs, attorney-at-law Anuradha Jayaratne said that as public servants, before talking about their rights, they should think about whether they have fulfilled their duties and responsibilities for public service.
He said that they are expected to carry out their duties, setting high service standards and using their skills more than ordinary government employees.
Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms, Wasantha Perera, also expressed her views requesting the new appointees that as public servants, they should serve the country honestly and provide high quality service to the people.
Additional Secretary of the Ministry, Rohana Hapugaswatta and other Ministry officials were also present.
