Fifteen teams are expected to compete at the upcoming National Water Polo Championship organized by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU), which is set to take place from October 29 to November 5 at the Air Force Swimming Pool Complex in Ratmalana.
In the men’s category, there will be eight teams competing: Sri Lanka Air Force, Royal College Aquatic Club, Royal College Union Aquatic Club, Old Thomian Swimming Club (OTSC), Ananda College Aquatic Club, Nalanda College Aquatic Club, and Sri Lanka Police. As for the women’s category, Visakha Vidyalaya Aquatic Club, Sri Lanka Air Force, Ladies’ College Aquatic Club, and Bishop’s College Aquatic Club will be contending for the honors.
The tournament will feature senior age category players above 15 years old, and SLASU has plans to select a team to compete against India in a future event to be held in Sri Lanka. The exact dates for this event are yet to be confirmed and will be decided through discussions between the two countries, according to SLASU.
In the previous year’s championship, the undefeated Air Force men’s team secured the National Water Polo Championship title, ending an 11-year drought. They claimed the trophy after defeating OTSC with a score of 9-7. Aircraftsman Udayantha RLK was recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, and Officer Cadet de Silva UIO was awarded as the Highest Scorer of the Tournament.
