A solemn occasion to mark the commencement of duties of the year 2024 was held under the patronage of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera at the Navy Headquarters this morning (01st January 2024).

Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, in his address to the gathered naval personnel and civil staff employees, extended heartfelt New Year wishes, expressing hopes for a prosperous and joyous year for them and their families. Adding further, he said that the year 2023 was a challenging year for everyone. The Commander of the Navy commended the dedication of naval personnel in nation-building efforts during challenging times. He also mentioned that each member of the Navy is anticipated to fulfill their responsibilities with unwavering commitment, remaining unaffected by external influences.

Despite the absence of a visible enemy post a thirty-year war, the Navy Commander underscored that the non-traditional maritime threats along the nation’s coast are akin to invisible threats. Emphasizing the need for sustained commitment, the Naval Commander stresses that naval personnel  must remain dedicated to combating illegal activities, including drug trafficking.

The Navy Chief also affirmed that in 2023, the Navy effectively fulfilled its national security responsibilities, intercepting substantial amounts of narcotics destined for Sri Lanka via maritime routes. Also, he mentioned that the Navy’s achievements have garnered widespread acclaim in society, and it is the duty of every Navy member to uphold and build on that acclaim in 2024.

The Chief of Staff of the Navy, Board of Management, flag-ranking officers, senior and junior officers, sailors and civil staff employees were also present at the event to take the oath pledging their allegiance to the public service. This collective commitment to public service was not confined to the central ceremony at the Navy Headquarters alone, as simultaneous events unfolded in each Naval Command.
