0 3

The Navy last night (30) assisted a firefighting team from the Western Naval Command to extinguish a sudden fire that broke out in a container at the Fourth Yard (BQ4) of the Bandaranaike Jetty in the Colombo Port.

At around 07.45 last night, the Colombo Port Control Room informed the Western Naval Command Operations Room that smoke was coming out of a container at the Fourth Yard (BQ IV) of the Bandaranaike Jetty in the Colombo Port and requested the assistance of a firefighting team to investigate.

Accordingly, the Navy, which immediately responded to the notification, took steps to dispatch a specially trained team from the Western Naval Command related to the suppression of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) hazards and fire engines to the scene.

The relevant Navy firefighting team safely opened the container from which the smoke was coming out and observed that a portion of the cleaning materials stored therein were on fire. Subsequently, with the assistance of port workers and the port firefighting team, the cleaning materials stored in the container were quickly removed from the container and the fire was prevented from spreading.
