Navy triumph in Defence Services Wushu Championship

Navy men’s and women’s teams emerged victorious in the 12 th Wushu Championship which was held at the Commander Parakrama Samaraweera Memorial Indoor Sports Complex, Welisara recently . In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Navy men’s and women’s teams won both titles respectively.

Contested in Gungshu, Nanquan and Taiji Jian events in Mens Taolu, Petty Officer N.K Premadasa, Able Seaman PMS Silva and Able Seaman D.D.T.N Anuradha won gold medals. Meanwhile, the silver medal in Chang Quan event was won by Able Seaman N.K.C.S Rathnasiri and the bronze medal in Taijiquan event was bagged by Sub Lieutenant AMOB Abeysinnghe.

In mens Sanda event under 52, 60, 70, 75 and 85kg weight classes, Leading Seaman G.A.M Chandika, Able Seaman P.N Balawardena, Able Seaman K.T.A.T.P Kumara, Leading Seaman A.T.S Rusiru and Leading Engineering Mechanic W.R.M.T Madushanka won gold medals. In the same vein, Leading Seaman E.M.K.R Priyankara, Leading Seaman SR Kumara, Chief Petty Officer L.A.S.D Amarasena, Leading Seaman D.A Sameera and Able Seaman Y.M.R.L Senaviratne secured silver medals in 52, 56, 70, 80 and 85 weight classes. Competing in mens Sanda 60 and 65kg weight classes, Petty Officer H.K.L Pushpakumara and Leading Physical Training Instructor K.V.G.C.R Weerasinghe won bronze medals.

Contested in Chang Quan and Nan Quan events in Womens Taolu, Woman Ordinary Seaman G.H.P Vatsala and Woman Leading Seaman N.I Udayangani won gold medals. The silver medal in Taiji Jian event was secured by Woman Leading Seaman R.D.S.P Dissanayake. In addition, Woman Leading Seaman S.V.P.R Dilhani, Woman Leading Seaman J.S Priyadarshani, Woman Leading Seaman K.V.S.D Kumarasinghe and Woman Leading Seaman A.H.A.N Harshika won gold medals in 52, 60, 65 and 75kg weight classes of womens Sanda event. Further, Woman Able Seaman M.I Bulathsinghala, Woman Able Seaman W.M.D.S Wijesinghe, Woman Able Seaman J.M Sandamali and Woman Able Seaman G.S Pabodha also won silver medals in 52, 56, 70 and 75kg weight classes. Moreover, the bronze medals in 56, 65 and 70kg weight classes were secured by Woman Ordinary Seaman G.L.M Nethmini, Woman Able Seaman V.L.D Devindi and Woman Able Seaman J.W.N Madhuvanthi.

The Chief Guest of the final day of the tournament was Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy and Director General Operations, Rear Admiral Pradeep Ratnayake. .
