0 14

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) advised us to evacuate 316 families from their homes in Haputale and Haldummulla divisions of Badulla district due to bad weather conditions, said Badulla District Secretary Prabhat Abeywardena.

He also stated that due to the current rainy situation, all the waterways around Badulla district have been activated, and the upper water catchment areas of those streams, there is a risk of disastrous consequences at an unexpected moment due to the rain water moving to the lower areas.

He stated that, accordingly, 241families in Haldummulla, Meeriyabedda are being evacuated, but those people are reluctant to move to a safe place, because they are worried about the safety of their properties. Hence, the relocation process is at a standstill.

The NBRO has recommended Saturday (21) to not resettle 33 families in the same areas, who were evacuated from Meeriyabedda area. Therefore new locations had to be found to provide housing facilities to those 33 families.

However, 74 families residing in estate lines in Haputale Division were happy to be evacuated on Saturday (21).

Last Saturday (21) afternoon rains in Haputale area blocked the Badulla-Colombo road in Viharakele area. Drivers are advised to drive carefully because of poor visibility caused by mist, and dangers posed by landslides. If such a situation occurs, drivers are requested to report to the nearest Police station.

He requested people to avoid bathing in waterfalls or related water streams.
