Squash enthusiasts in Sri Lanka have been closely following the journey of a young and promising athlete, Nevindu Lakman, as he makes his mark on the international stage.

Hailing from D S Senanayake College, Lakman has emerged as a dominant force in junior squash and is set to represent Sri Lanka in the prestigious WSF World Junior Squash Championship in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament is scheduled to be held from July 18 to 29 at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC).

The journey of Nevindu Lakman to the world championship has been nothing short of impressive. He earned his spot in the championship by achieving significant milestones in various international tournaments. At the Indian Junior Open held in February 2023, which was classified as an Asian Junior Platinum Event, Lakman showcased his talent and determination by reaching the semi-finals. Following this success, he continued his winning streak at the Southern Slam Indian Junior Open in May 2023, an Asian Junior Gold Event, where he again advanced to the semi-finals.

The young athlete’s performance in the Singapore Junior Open held in December 2022 also earned him recognition, as he secured a commendable third place in the Asian Junior Gold Event. Another highlight in his already illustrious career was his exceptional performance at the Qatar Junior Open in March 2023, where he claimed the runner-up position in the Asian Junior Silver Event.

Lakman’s recent performance at the Asian Junior Team Championship held in India was equally noteworthy. The rising star managed to defeat the top-ranked players from Kuwait and Singapore, showcasing his skill and potential. Though he faced tough competition against the No.1 players from Hong Kong and Japan, the closely contested encounters demonstrated his ability to compete at a high level.

The WSF World Junior Squash Championship in Melbourne is a momentous occasion for Lakman, as he will be the sole representative from Sri Lanka in the 12-day championship. Competing against 245 players from around the world in the men’s individual championship, the women’s individual championship, and the women’s team championship, Lakman’s journey promises to be both challenging and rewarding.

As Nevindu Lakman steps onto the court in Melbourne, the entire nation of Sri Lanka will be cheering him on, hoping that his talent, dedication, and hard work will bring glory to the country.

His participation in the WSF World Junior Squash Championship is not just an individual achievement but a representation of the nation’s commitment to fostering young sporting talent and making a mark in the world of sports.
