New Chairmen appointed for several Parliamentary Committees

The first sessions of three pivotal parliamentary committees for the Tenth Parliament convened last week, marking the election of their new leadership.

On January 23, the Committee on Public Petitions held its inaugural meeting, during which Member of Parliament R.M. Gamini Ratnayake was unanimously elected as Chairman. His nomination was proposed by MP Manoj Rajapaksa and seconded by MP Ajith Gihan. After his election, Mr. Ratnayake expressed gratitude to the committee members and emphasized the need to expedite the petition investigation process to provide timely relief to petitioners.

On January 24, Deputy Minister (Dr.) Harshana Suriyapperuma was elected Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means. His nomination was proposed by MPs Ruwan Mapalagama and Champika Hettiarachchi. Dr. Suriyapperuma pledged to work collaboratively with members and officers to fulfill the committee’s responsibilities effectively and meet public expectations.

The Committee on Ethics and Privileges also held its first meeting on the same day. Minister Krishantha Abeysena was elected as Chairman, with his nomination supported by MPs (Lawyers) Thushari Jayasinghe and Krishnan Kalaichelvey.

The newly elected chairpersons expressed their commitment to steering the committees towards their objectives and serving the public interest.
