New Electric Fence installed to mitigate Human-Elephant Conflicts

The newly invented Electric Fence testing and installation ceremony was held under the patronage of Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Krishantha Abesekara and Minister of Wildlife and Environment, Dr Dammika Patabendi, at the Weerawila Open Prison premises, Hambantota.

The project was undertaken by the National Engineering and Research Development Center towards preventing Human-Elephant Conflicts and to protect farmers, using new technologies.

The newly Electric Fences were installed in areas surrounding the Weerawila Open Prison.

The documents were handed over to the Ministers and the operations are being examined by the National Engineering, Research and Development (NERD) Centre.

The Ministers engaged in discussions with residents in the vicinity of Weerawila Open Prison regarding their concerns about Human-Elephant Conflicts.

The event was participated by Secretary to the Ministry of Science and Technology, Mohamed Navavi, NERD Chairman Eng. Thilak Patiyakumbura, NERD Director General Dr. Jayathu Samarawikrama among other distinguished invitees.
