Additional Surveyor General W. Sudath L.C. Perera took over duties as the Surveyor General with effect from August 30.
He completed his primary education at Welikada Dharmapala Primary School and his secondary education at St. Mary’s College, Negombo and he is a Physical Science Honours Graduate from the University of Colombo.
Perera taught Mathematics for GCE A/L students at St. Peter’s College, Colombo. Later, he joined the Survey Department as Assistant Superintendent of Surveys in 1988 and successfully completed his Higher Diploma in surveying at the Institute of Surveying and Mapping, Diyatalawa.
He obtained a Professional Master’s Degree in Geoinformatics (Spatial Information Systems) from ITC Netherlands, in 1998. He worked as a Lecturer and a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Surveying and Mapping, Diyatalawa and contributed to producing many survey professionals for the nation.
He has been instrumental in pioneering and supervising various development schemes of land surveys such as densification of the control network in Sri Lanka, surveys for the development of airports and expressways in Sri Lanka, acquisition surveys for various development projects, engineering surveys for development and settlements in the Mahawali areas and has made a great contribution to improve Land Title Registration and management in Sri Lanka and greatly contributed to develop the Bim Saviya programme.
Currently he is working as a member of the National Steering Committee appointed to establish a National Spatial Data Infrastructure allowing better and efficient use and sharing of geospatial information which will have a great impact on development activities.
Currently he holds the position of Vice Chairman of the Land Survey Council and will take up duties as Chairman with his appointment as Surveyor General.
Sudath Perera has immense experience in surveying and mapping in both local and foreign contexts and his vision is to take the Survey Department to a new dimension to provide maximum support to national development through a professionally qualified dedicated staff while delivering more efficient and customer friendly services.
