“New Village – New Country” programme Matara District Agriculture Committee meeting on October 16

The meeting of the Matara District Agriculture Committee, which takes special decisions for the future development of various sectors of the agricultural industry in Matara District, was held on October 16 in the auditorium of the Matara Kadawath Sathara Divisional Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Matara District Secretary Ganesha Amarasinghe.

Here, the problems affecting the obtaining fuel for the pumping stations in Matara district, the damage caused to the agricultural lands due to the rains that have affected Matara district due to the bad weather conditions, the problems arising in obtaining insurance compensation by the Agricultural Insurance Board in relation to crop damage and many other issues. Actions to be taken are discussed.

The progress in the irrigation sector, the joint mechanism for food security and nutrition in Matara district and the “New Village – New Country” programme, the progress of the implementation of the decisions taken in the last agriculture committee meeting, the problems arising from the agriculture committees, the monthly reports of the institutions related to the agriculture industry. The progress, the letters sent to the district agriculture committee, the mountain decade agricultural proposals, the rearing of domestic goats, the cultivation of crops including coconut, rubber, and cinnamon in Tea Small holdings Plantation Development Authority and the progress and problems of various institutions were also discussed.

Matara Additional District Secretary (Lands) Kanchana Talpawila, Matara District Director of Agriculture IRN Abeydeera, regional secretaries of Matara district, government officials related to the agriculture industry, representatives of farmers’ organisations and others participated in this event. The meeting was organised by the Agriculture Division of the Matara District Secretariat.
