The National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) started the first phase of the programme to provide fresh milk to households in Colombo City and suburbs from yesterday (11).
In order to eliminate malnutrition among schoolchildren, the NLDB has taken steps to start a programme of providing fresh milk to households in Colombo and its suburbs in the morning and evening.
The inauguration of the first phase of this programme was held yesterday at the NLDB premises in Narahenpita with the participation of Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera. Agriculture Ministry Secretary Gunadasa Samarasinghe and several officers of the Livestock Development Division participated in this event.
According to this arrangement, steps have been taken to supply fresh milk to houses and housing schemes located within the Colombo City area.
It is also accepted to order liquid milk by calling 0117 173 984. According to that, arrangements have been made to deliver those orders by motorbikes to the Colombo City area and its suburbs, said NLDB Chairman Professor H.W. Cyril.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera expressed his views here: “The National Livestock Development Board has started a new programme to popularize liquid fresh milk from yesterday. In the future, we have decided to spread the distribution of liquid milk gradually to other areas as well.
“Dry milk powder is not used in many countries. In many countries, it is popular to drink fresh milk, but in our country, we have avoided the consumption of liquid milk as we are so used to taking milk powder for several decades. Therefore, we have to build a new culture of fresh milk consumption.
Many people are talking about the rise in malnutrition these days. To prevent malnutrition, fluid milk and egg consumption should be increased. The success of this programme shows that the people accept this work order”.
The Minister also said that he expected to start the next phase by focusing on the success of this first phase.
