Cabinet Spokesman Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the Government has no intention of removing the price controls imposed on rice yesterday (28).
He made these remarks during the Cabinet press briefing held to announce the decisions taken at this week’s Cabinet meeting.
Addressing concerns about rice shortages, Minister Jayatissa highlighted that the issue primarily involves red raw rice (Rathu Kakulu), rather than Nadu rice. He expressed optimism that the situation would be resolved within nearly two weeks, coinciding with the ongoing harvest.
“No matter how many proposals are made, we have no plans to lift the price controls on rice. The problem lies with red raw rice, not Nadu rice. If queues form, it is usually for red raw rice. To address this, we need to wait until the ongoing paddy harvesting is complete. We expect the red raw rice issue to be fully resolved within the next two weeks. This harvest season is expected to yield nearly 700,000 Metric Tonnes of red raw rice,” the minister said.
