Nominations called for Elpitiya PS

The Election Commission has announced details regarding the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election.

Under the Provincial Councils Elections Act, the Returning Officer yesterday announced the accepting of nominations for the election of Chairman, Deputy Chairman and the members of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha.

Accordingly, deposits will be accepted from candidates from August 26 until 12.00 noon on September 11 (except the Saturdays and Sundays falling within this period) and nominations will be called from September 9 to until 12.00 noon on September 12, at the Galle District Secretariat by the Returning Officer, the Election Commission announced yesterday (26).

The term of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha that was in effect from November 2019 ended on March 6, 2024 after the budget was defeated for the fourth consecutive time.

As a result of the budget being defeated for the fourth consecutive time, according to the Provincial Councils Act, a special Commissioner took over the functioning of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha.

Also, a special gazette was issued by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena extending the term of office of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha until November 4, 2024.
