The President’s House, which was being built in Kankesanturai, Jaffna, was leased to the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) for about 50 years to build an Information Technology University.
The investment value here is approximately Rs. 5,000 billion. The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology is going to develop this as an IT University in collaboration with a Canadian investor.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for that purpose took place yesterday (16) at the Urban Development Authority Auditorium, Battaramulla under the chairmanship of Nimesh Herath, Chairman of the Urban Development Authority.
As per the instructions of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the decision was reached to lease this President’s House to the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) in a discussion held recently under the chairmanship of Sagala Ratnayake, Chief of Presidential Staff and Presidential Adviser on National Security.
The construction work of President’s House in Kankesanturai, Jaffna, was started during the administration of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. It was within the five years of 2010-2015.
The construction work here was stopped subsequently. This complex located in Kankesanturai has a land of 30 acres, of which 12 acres are these building complexes.
The rest of the land was acquired from the people of the area and 12 acres owned by the government was initially decided to be leased to SLIIT.
It was decided to give the remaining 17 acres of land that was taken over from the people to the SLIIT institution on the basis of income to the people. The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) hopes to quickly complete the work for a fully-fledged IT University. Upon completion it will be named as Northern Uni IT University.
It has the ability to impart information technology knowledge to about 1,500 students annually. Also, after the construction of this IT University, students from the North will not have to come to Colombo to study IT.
The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) is confident that the information technology knowledge of the children in the Northern Province, which has been battered by the 30 years of war, will be developed and they will be able to perfect their knowledge so that they can fit into the modern world.
This University of Information Technology is going to be further expanded and students from neighbouring India will also be given the opportunity to study here.
Prasad Ranaweera, Director General of Urban Development Authority, Indy Pathmanathan, Chairman of Canadian Investment Company and Prof. Lakshman L. Ratnayake, Chairman of SLIT and a group of board members participated in the signing of the MoU occasion.
