President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday emphasized the importance of breaking free from the traditional political stronghold that has long governed the country and pledged his government’s commitment to empowering all communities, be it Sinhalese, Tamil or Muslim alike. Speaking at a public rally in Vavuniya yesterday, President Dissanayake highlighted his administration’s dedication to eradicating poverty, ending political corruption, and tackling social issues like drug abuse.

The President went on to say that his government was committed to returning lands that were taken from the people in the North for security reasons.

“We also know that there was a war in the North, and it caused great destruction. But there are still political prisoners. We are ready to take steps to release them, as advised by the Attorney General.”

His speech underscored the National People’s Power’s (NPP’s) mission to build a nation that prioritizes unity, equality, and transparency, inviting the people to join him in reshaping the future of Sri Lanka. “Our country is deeply divided, whether by ethnicity, language, religion, or even caste. This division prevents us from moving forward as a nation. The main goal of the NPP is to end these divisions. We want to put an end to the old system where people were separated based on their culture, language, or religion. The first step is to bring all people together under one flag, no matter their background. True unity cannot be achieved by dividing people into groups and doing politics based on those divisions,” he added. The President said the NPP victory is not just for us, it’s a victory for all the people of this country. “It’s a victory for Sri Lanka. So, for the future of our country, the people of the North and the Vanni district must decide to support the NPP and help us win,” he added.

“The NPP is the movement that has earned the trust of Sinhalese, Tamils, and Muslims alike. For the first time in Sri Lankan history, all communities have come together under one flag. This is the path to unity. When a government like this is formed, it will be much easier to solve other problems.

“Let’s unite and move forward together,” the President said.
