NPP will explore revision of CICT, WCT agreements – Dr.Nalinda
A government led by the National People’s Power (NPP) will explore the possibility of revising the agreements concerning the Colombo Port’s Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT) and the Western Container Terminal with India and China, with the aim of benefiting the country, former Kalutara district Parliamentarian and NPP Executive Committee member Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa said.
“Our government will explore the possibility of revising these agreements diplomatically,” he said. Dr. Jayathissa said that the Colombo Port has been ranked among the best 24 ports in the world and no port in India is above the Colombo Port.
He stated that Sri Lanka’s geo-strategic position holds little value if the country’s ports and jetties are sold to foreign entities, resulting in revenue that rightfully belongs to the country being generated by outsiders.
He added that if these attempts fail, they will start developing the North Terminal of the Colombo Port to generate more income for the country.
Dr. Jayathissa also said that the Trincomalee Harbour will be turned into an oil storage facility in the region under their government.
“We are focusing on a production economy by boosting the domestic production sector. Small-scale entrepreneurs will be given financial assistance without collateral to boost their production,” he added.
Speaking at an election rally in Alubomulla on Sunday, Dr. Jayathissa said that the previous governments have made the people completely dependent on foreign products by discouraging local producers.
He remarked that domestic industries, including the production of incense sticks, mats, brooms, ekel brooms, and ropes, which once thrived in the country, have now diminished. “Currently, we are reliant on imports for virtually all goods,” he said.
Gamini Harischandra Perera of NPP Birmingham branch organized the rally.
