National People’s Power (NPP) Presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Tuesday said that it is necessary to form a government that does not make racism its ideology.
He was addressing an election rally in Kinniya he said that NPP wanted a government that wins the confidence of all communities in the country.
“There is no point in forming a government with the majority confidence of Sinhalese people only,” he said. He said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa came into power by sowing seed of racism in 2019. “The Rajapaksas who were defeated in 2015 came into power again.“But they did not focus on promoting democracy, eradicating corruption and frauds,” he said.
He said that the Rajapaksas came into power in 2019 by creating rifts among Sinhala and Muslim communities.
“When other countries in the world decided to either bury or cremate the Muslims who became victims of Covid-19, the then government did not allow the bodies being buried,” he said. The Muslims in our country had to perform final rites of their kith and kin who became victims of Covid-19 against their conscience.They were not allowed to perform final rites of their relatives according to their religious beliefs.
