Nurse mowed down by lorry, husband injured in Piliyandala

Piliyandala Police said that a nurse at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, who was returning home with her husband after work was killed after being run over by a lorry loaded with cement on Saturday night.

The deceased Dinusha Liyanage (47), a mother of two, was a resident of Jaliyagoda in Piliyandala.Police said her husband sustained minor injuries in the accident.

The husband of the deceased nurse also works as a technical manager in a private hospital and after work, he had gone to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital on his motorcycle to pick his wife.

While the two were coming home, they had bought food for the night and when they were about 50 meters from the house, in front of a supermarket, the iron frame used between the left front and rear wheels of the lorry loaded with cement had collided with the motorcycle and a result it had overturned, Police said.

Police said the husband of the nurse had fallen on the left side of the road and the nurse had fellen on the right side of the road and her head was crushed by the lorries’ rear wheels.

It has been further revealed in the police investigation that the lorry moved forward about eight meters and stopped after the accident.

The lorry driver has been arrested and he will be produced in court.
