One dead, 10 injured in mob attack on a house in Vavuniya

A mob attacked a house where a birthday party was being held in Thonical area in Vavuniya and set the house on fire, leaving one young woman dead and 10 injured. The injured were admitted to the Vavuniya hospital yesterday (23).

The victims suffered from burns and cuts caused by weapons. The deceased is a 21-year-old girl resident of Vavuniya Omanthai.

A birthday party organized in this house lasted until the morning and at that time, a group of people entered the house from behind and stabbed the girl with a knife. The young woman who was seriously injured by the stabbing has also suffered burns. Later, the mobs entered the house and attacked everyone in the house and set the house on fire. When the house was burning, the surrounding people reported the incident to the fire fighting units and the police, and those trapped inside the house fire were taken to hospital.

Many items in the house have been burnt to ashes due to the fire. Police believe the attack was a result of a personal dispute. CCTV footage revealed that a masked group came and set fire to the house and the Vavuniya Police is conducting further investigations.
