The banks of the Gal Oya have been breached in the Nena Kaadu area in Ampara and the resulting floodwaters have submerged paddy fields in the Dighavapiya colony.
Around 1,000 acres of paddy fields and land in the Dighavapiya colony, Nena Kaadu area and Samanthurai area have gone under water as a result of the breaching of the Gal Oya banks, which occurred as a result of the prevailing adverse weather in that part of the country.
The crops in most of these paddy fields that have been submerged under floodwaters had been harvested, while many other paddy fields had been close to being harvested.
Sluice gates of the Senanayake Samudraya in Inginiyagala had been opened with the heavy rainfall that was experienced continuously in the Ampara district, after the water level rose to 108 feet 03 inches in the catchment area. Currently, five spill gates of the Senanayake Samudraya have been opened by 15 inches each and 1,177 cubic feet of water is being released from them per second.
The banks of the Gal Oya breached in the Nena Kaadu area previously due to the flooding that took place in January 2024. The renovated banks of the Gal Oya in the Nena Kaadu area breached again due to flooding that occurred in November 2024.
