“Only leader who enacted a plan to save the country is Ranil”

Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said yesterday (29) at Homagama that he will support the current President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the upcoming Presidential Election as he is a leader who has the strength and vision to rebuild this country.

The Minister stated this during a public rally in Homagama held in order to inform the people of his political stance following the decision taken by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna regarding the party’s position at the upcoming Presidential Election.

“The agreements that have been signed for rebuilding the country need to be kept going until 2048. If we want to see a developing country in 2048 as responsible ministers, the only leader who can give a guarantee that it will be done is the current President.”

The Minister further said the experience of Wickremesinghe has brought the country to where it is today and added that he will support the President who can make decisions without hesitation for the well-being of the country.

The Minister said he and many others had suggested to the SLPP to support the incumbent President.

He said during yesterday’s Politburo meeting, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam had submitted a proposal that the SLPP symbol should be on the ballot paper.

The Minister said 11 members including himself had opposed the move and said the SLPP should support Ranil Wickremesinghe who rebuilt the country.

“As the second proposal, when it was proposed that all SLPP members who are not in favour of the above proposal and support any other candidate will be subjected to a disciplinary investigation regardless of their rank, none of us expressed any objection to it. All of us were in favour of the disciplinary inquiry proposal,” he added.

The Minister who said that he had always stood against corruption and had worked for the people’s well-being added that he is of the view that other than the incumbent President, there is no other leader in contemporary politics to take the country forward.
