Only nominated and lost candidates can enter through National List – EC

Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake says except for a candidate who contested the General Election and lost, political parties cannot nominate a person whose name is not mentioned in the National List submitted by political parties prior to the election as a nominee for a parliamentary seat from the National List.

In response to an inquiry, Ratnayake said that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who did not contest this election and was not nominated as a National List candidate by the New Democratic Front, cannot return to Parliament through the National List.

Some media have reported that former President Wickremesinghe will be nominated to the National List and when inquired whether such a nomination is possible Ratnayake said that there is no scope for such a nomination under the law.

When queried Ratnayake said Dilith Jayaweera of Sarvajana Balaya who contested from the Gampaha district and lost can enter parliament as he who contested and lost.
