Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela yesterday issued an open warrant for the CID to arrest the Third Secretary of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Oman E. Kushan over allegedly trafficking of Sri Lankan women for sex.
As it is necessary to issue warrants with international red notices to arrest the suspect who is abroad, the Magistrate, who was satisfied with the facts presented to the court by filing a motion by the Criminal Investigation Department, issued this warrant.
The CID stated that there is a suspicion that the suspect may avoid the proceedings and not return to Sri Lanka and requested to issue a warrant to arrest the suspect.
The Magistrate’s Court had earlier imposed a travel ban on him.
The CID also stated that they have recorded statements from the victim ladies pertaining to the incident as well.
Eight suspect who were arrested in connection with human trafficking to Oman, have already been in remand custody. The suspects were arrested on charges of sending a group of Sri Lankan women to Oman under the pretence of providing them with employment and then forcing them to work as sex workers.
“Seven more foreign agencies involved with the same incident have been identified and obtained travel ban on said agency owners as well,” the CID also stated.
The investigation has been launched following a complaint lodged by the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
