Osanda Heenkenda a cricketing star in the making

17 year old, Osanda Heenkenda a Grade Eleven student of St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy is an outstanding cricketer who started playing cricket for the under 13 Team in the year 2014 when he was 10 years old under the coaching of Krishantha Gunawardena, Julian Arnolda, Sanjeewa Bandara and Anura Halangoda.

He is a right arm off spinner and right hand middle order batsman and his best bowling feat was claiming five wickets for 10 runs against Ranabima Royal College, Gannoruwa.

As a batsman he was associated in a partnership of 90 runs with the Number nine batsman for the eighth wicket against Vidyartha College, Kandy in a Tournament match and Osanda’s contribution was an unbeaten knock of 39 runs. He was a student of St. Sylvester’s College from Grade One onwards and became the Junior Deputy Head Prefect.

In the year 2015 as a second year player in the School Under 13 Cricket team Osanda bagged 20 wickets in four matches during the season including 3 for 43 against Royal College, Colombo and again in the same year as the Captain of the under 13 team he led the School side to final round of the Division One under 13 Cricket tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association. In 2017 he played for the Under 15 team and excelled as an all-rounder scoring 150 runs in five matches and his highest score being 70 runs against Vidyartha College. He claimed 18 wickets in four matches and his best bowling feat was claiming 4 wickets for 49 runs against Trinity College.

In 2019 he led his team -to the final round in the Under 15 Division one cricket tournament as a batsman and his highest score was 55 against Polonnaruwa Royal College. His best bowling feat was capturing 5 wickets for 40 runs against Wickremashila College,Giriulla.

He could not participate in Cricket in the year 2020 due to the Covid19 pandemic and he is thankful to his coaches, Prefect of Games, Thusitha Pallekumbura, and Master in charge, Waruna Herath for the support given to him to improve cricket.
