National Dengue Control Unit’s Medical Officer Dr. Ashani Hewage said yesterday (5) that 1,000 people infected with dengue have been reported in the past five days since December 1.
She said that with the prevailing rainy conditions, the number of people infected with dengue virus has increased and currently 250 patients are reported each day.
Thus, there is a huge increase in dengue patients in December, she added.
More than 77,500 dengue cases have been reported and the number of deaths due to dengue virus infection has been reported as 76 up to now. She also said that 47 percent of dengue cases were reported from the Western Province.
Most of the cases have been reported from the districts of Colombo and Gampaha in the Western province and the highest number of dengue cases have been reported from the MOH Division of Colombo.
