Over 80% university students clueless on voting – Study

Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said that last year, a survey was conducted involving 250 university students in Sri Lanka regarding their voting intention at a national election and 80 percent of them had sought advice from their parents regarding whom to vote for.

He said that this is a perfect example of the fact that there is no formal discussion among the university student community on matters related to politics.

Ratnayake was speaking at a meeting held recently at the Kandy District Secretariat auditorium to raise awareness about the Election Expenses Regulation Act.

He emphasised that a few decades ago, university students had the power to change even their parents’ voting intentions and today they have reached the point of seeking advice from their parents on whom to vote for.

“Politics in our country is talked about only during election season. We must understand that politics and elections are not one but two,” he added.
