The Ingiriya Police say that a man has complained that the death of his wife who suffered from high blood pressure and diabetes for sometime occurred due to an overdosed wrong drug.
P.M. Somawathi, a 62-year-old mother of three, who was a resident of Urugala, Ingiriya, has died this way.
The husband of the deceased woman, W.Leelaratne, took his wife’s diagnosis book to the clinic of Horana Base Hospital on July 31 and the doctor noted the drugs she needed in the diagnosis book, the Police said.
Due to the fact that the three drugs prescribed in the diagnosis book were not available in the hospital, he had bought them from a drug store in Ingiriya town.
After consuming the medicine for about a week, the deceased woman developed multiple complications such as difficulty in getting up, body pain, loss of concentration, loose bowel movements, decreased urination, and blisters on the feet and mouth. Therefore, she was admitted to the Ingiriya District Hospital.
After being treated in the hospital for about two days, she did not recover and became critical. Therefore, the hospital authorities took steps to refer her to the Horana Base Hospital in an ambulance.
While she was being treated in Ward 8 of the Horana hospital, a nurse checked the medicines she had taken and told her that one of the medicines she had taken (methotrexate) is prescribed for cancer patients.
It has been learned that cancer patients are given the drug only once a week but the notes on the packet containing the medicine advised the patient to take it daily. In addition, it was revealed that the drug is also given to people with autoimmune diseases to reduce their body’s immunity.
Even though she was treated for seven days from last August 12 till the morning of 19th, she died on Saturday morning (19) without any improvement in her condition.
W.Leelaratne, the husband of the deceased woman, came to the Ingiriya Police with her diagnosis book and the medicine by the pharmacy in the Ingiriya town and complained against negligence.
A Magisterial inquiry is scheduled for the death.
