Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) arrested a Pakistani national who had smuggled heroin into the country by hiding it inside his body as capsules, while staying at a hotel in Galle, on Saturday (28).
It was reported that he had arrived in the country on January 26.
Police have found 80 grams of heroin in capsules which he had eliminated from his body after coming to the hotel.
He has been admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital to check whether there are more capsules containing heroin inside his body.
Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police in charge of Galle, Upula Seneviratne has taken steps to interdict a police sergeant who had been assigned to provide security to the Pakistani national at the hospital.
He has been interdicted for leaving the suspect, who was in his custody, alone at the hospital and leaving the hospital premises neglecting his duties. The police officer had also carried the handcuffs with him.
It was the SSP of Galle Division who had ordered the SP Galle to assign two police officers for the security of the suspect at the hospital. The interdicted officer is one of them. The interdiction is effective from January 29, police said.
The PNB is conducting investigations on the drug smuggler.
