The government has decided to draft a Patient Safety Rights Charter to ensure the safety of hospitalised patients.
Health and Industries Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said that as per the reports from many countries in the world, one out of seven patients who are hospitalised face issues in the hospital, and it is a global situation.
The Minister stated this in the discussion held with the hospital staff on Wednesday (15) after participating in a special inspection tour to find out about the current condition of the Gampaha Wathupitiwala Base Hospital. The Minister also said that he decided to prepare this Charter considering the problems faced by the patients during hospitalisation.
The Minister said that it was discussed in the Parliament’s Sectoral Oversight Committee that a charter of patients’ rights should be unveiled in the future and it may become a law in the future.
The Minister also said that last year 700 complaints were reported to the Health Ministry regarding the problems that arose during the hospitalisation of patients.
The Minister further stressed the necessity of implementing a special mechanism to ensure effective patient – clinician communication since it is the cornerstone of good healthcare.
