A Police Constable who had gone in pursuit to capture and arrest a suspect who had jumped into a canal was swept away by the current of the stream and disappeared.
This had happened when a suspect who was kept in a cell at the Ja-Ela Police Station was being prepared to be escorted to Court.
A team of officers had been taking the suspect, who had been arrested for a heroin related incident, to the Police jeep to be transported to Court when he had attempted to flee. The suspect had jumped into the canal near the Police station with handcuffs and was about to flee when several Police officers had also jumped into the canal to apprehend the suspect. Police Constable Krishnamurthy Piradapan (99033) 26, who was attached to the Ja-Ela Police Station, who had jumped into the canal, had gone missing after being swept away by the current. The PC is a resident of Old Post Office Road, First Lane, Chavakachcheri. The suspect, who was trying to escape, had been taken to Police custody by other officers. According to Police, Anju Lakshan, a resident of No. 217 Sri Bodhirajarama Road was taken into Police custody.
Ja-Ela Police OIC Chaminda Edirisuriya, are conducting investigations.
