Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said in Parliament yesterday (5) that the people are suffering greatly due to the increase in water bills, electricity bills and gas prices, but instead of solving the problems, the Government is not paying heed to them.

The Leader of the Opposition said this while raising a question under Standing Order 27(2).

He said that although the Government has shown that inflation has decreased, the people have not felt its effects and an extremely difficult environment has been created in which the people are heavily burdened by the rising cost of living.

The people need immediate relief, he said.

The Opposition Leader said: “The country is in a bad state. A total of 290 elephants have been lost in nine months, which is a great environmental disaster. The rent of the Ministry of Wildlife has not been paid. Eleven people have gone missing in the past 48 hours. This country has become a drug paradise. Was the increase in gas prices conscientious? The economy is collapsing and a heavy burden has been placed on the people. The Government should be more sensitive.”

Leader of the House Susil Premajayantha said that the Presidential Commission’s report on the Easter attacks has been sent to the Attorney General’s Department. The Easter attacks were an unfortunate incident. Going to an international investigation means that we are exposed to the international community in a negative way. The recommendations of the Presidential Commission report should be speedily implemented, he said.
