AIM Haathim of St. Peter’s College clinched victory in the Under-14 Boys Category, securing an impressive trio of gold medals while setting three new meet records at the recently concluded 48th Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Championships, sponsored by MILO. The event took place at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool Complex over the weekend.
Haathim’s exceptional performance earned him a remarkable 45 points, making history as the highest achievement by a swimmer throughout the five-day tournament.
The 13-year-old swimmer displayed his dominance by clocking a remarkable time of 1:02.89 in the Under-14 100m Butterfly, obliterating a 28-year-old record. The previous record of 1:03.17, established by Gihan Ranathunga of S Thomas’ College in 1995, was shattered as Haathim outpaced his closest rival, Jaden de Silva (1:07.28) of Stafford International School, by nearly
five seconds.
Continuing his display of excellence, Haathim made substantial improvements in the boys’ U-14 200m Individual Medley, recording a time of 2:26.50. This feat surpassed the previous record set by Bihandu Hansana of Sri Devananda College in 2019, which stood at 2:31.49. Haathim’s performance was over 16 seconds faster than the second-place winner, Sinura Wijesinghe of St.
Joseph’s College, who clocked 2:43.01.
The young athlete’s third record-breaking accomplishment emerged in the Boys 50m Butterfly—his specialty event. He achieved a time of 28.61, effectively erasing the previous record of 29.22 set by Bhanuka Jayathilake of Royal College in 2017.
