Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya on Saturday called on Scouts to play a responsible role in safeguarding the country’s future, as she addressed the 169th birth anniversary celebration of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the World Scouting Movement, and World Scout Thinking Day.

The event was held on February 22 at the National Scout Headquarters.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said the Scouting Movement is not about holding positions but about developing discipline, readiness to assist others and a commitment to service under the principle of “being prepared.” She urged Scouts to serve society as disciplined and knowledgeable individuals who respect others and make effective use of modern technology.

She also encouraged environmentally responsible initiatives, including tree planting and the protection of water resources.

During the ceremony, laptops were symbolically distributed to several districts under the Scout Digitalization Project, along with first-aid kits. Chief Scout Commissioner Attorney-at-Law Manoj Nanayakkara presented the Prime Minister with a commemorative Scout stamp collection and cover.

Secretary to the Prime Minister Pradeep Saputhanthri, officials of the Sri Lanka Scout Association and Scouts from across the country were also in attendance. (Newswire)
