PM lauds Microsoft’s support for education, social benefit sectors

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena expressed appreciation over Microsoft’s contributions to Sri Lanka’s digital infrastructure development and to the education and social benefit spheres. He said this when a delegation headed by President of Microsoft India and South Asia, Puneet Chandok called on him at Temple Trees in Colombo on Tuesday (19).

Chndlok briefed the Prime Minister on Microsoft’s journey in Sri Lanka for the past two decades, focusing on the milestones achieved, investments made, and the overall impact on the local economy, technology sector, and societal benefits.

He also explained the latest project focused on transforming the national school syllabus by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) education, aiming at preparing the younger generation for future challenges. This pilot programme is currently being run in 20 schools.

The Prime Minister thanked Microsoft for its contributions towards introduction of AI education to the national school syllabus. The delegation explained Microsoft’s vision and strategic plans for continuing to empower Sri Lanka over the next 20 years, focusing on technology transfer, innovation, and digital transformation initiatives. They also discussed potential areas of growth, including emerging technologies, digital infrastructure development, and how Microsoft plans to support Sri Lanka in becoming a regional tech hub.

The Microsoft delegation included Country Manager Harsha Randeny, South Asia Head Samik Roy, Regional Education Leader Larry Nelson and Bureau Chief Sakhri Sheenu.

MP Yadamini Gunawardena, Prime Minister’s Secretary Anura Dissanayake and Media Advisor Sugeeswara Senadhira participated.
