PM orders full probe by independent experts into Grade 5 Exam paper leak
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya emphasised the need for immediate justice for the students affected by the recent leak of the Grade 5 Scholarship Exam papers. She stressed the importance of a full investigation into the matter, conducted with the involvement of independent experts, and requested that the final report be presented promptly.
She stated this during a meeting held yesterday (26) morning with officials from all divisions of the Education Ministry.
Speaking at the meeting Dr. Amarasuriya further stated, “Improving the education system remains a primary goal of our government. We have decided to allocate a larger portion of the budget for education under this administration. It is crucial for institutions like the Education Ministry and the Department of Examinations to work towards regaining the public’s trust.”
She also emphasised the need for a systematic approach to filling teacher vacancies in a transparent manner that fosters public confidence. Addressing concerns about the mental well-being of students, the Prime Minister acknowledged the psychological challenges faced by children in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic downturn, which have contributed to familial and social strains. “The younger generation has had to confront the challenges of COVID-19 and economic instability, along with personal and familial difficulties. This must be addressed,” she remarked, adding that mental health interventions in schools are now more critical than ever.
The Prime Minister also mentioned plans to enhance school nutrition programmes by streamlining midday meal initiatives and ensuring that infrastructure development is conducted in a transparent and structured manner.
The Premier called for an end to the practice of involving politicians in school activities, stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of educational institutions.
Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputhanthri, Education Ministry Secretary Tilaka Jayasundara and all heads of divisions of the Education Ministry were present at the meeting.
