Police intercept vehicle; heroin recovered, four arrested

Police officers from Polgahawela shot and intercepted a car that ignored Police orders and was trying to get away yesterday (10) following information that drugs were being transported in it. 

A woman and a small child along with two other suspects who were travelling in the car were arrested. The shooting took place near the Udapola Magistrate’s Court on the Polgahawela Kurunegala Main road.

Polgahawela Police received information that a car was transporting a consignment of drugs from Colombo towards Kurunegala and a Police roadblock was set up in the Udapola area to intercept the vehicle.

The Police officers on duty at the roadblock spotted the suspicious car and ordered it to stop, but the driver continued to drive on disregarding the Police order.

Police officers fired at the wheel of the spedding car. Police said that the car was driven for a distance of about a kilometre eventhough the tire was punctured.

Meanwhile, the suspects who were travelling in the vehicle tried to run away, but were arrested. According to Police, nearly 50 packets of heroin, which were thrown out of the car by the suspects when they tried to escape, were also recovered. One suspect and the woman are residents of the Kegalle area, while the other suspect is identified as a resident of Panadura area.

Polgahawela Police is conducting further investigations as per the instructions of DIG of the Kurunegala District Anil Priyantha.
