Police sergeant suspended for sexual assault

Middeniya Police arrested a Police sergeant (37), attached to the Katuwana Police, on Saturday (29) evening, took a woman (58), on his motorcycle to a forest area and sexually assaulted her.

The woman is a resident of Katuwana, Labuhenagoda.

Investigations revealed that the sergeant had met the woman near the Katuwana market the previous day and obtained her phone number. On Saturday (29), the woman was visiting her daughter, when she received a phone call from the sergeant. She told him she was at her daughter’s house and was about to leave. The sergeant responded that, since he was nearby, and was also going to Katuwana, he could give her a lift. Since she did not object to the sergeant’s suggestion, he came to Middeniya, picked her up, proceeded to a forest area and raped her.

Consequent to her complaint to the Police, the sergeant was arrested, and on questioning, admitted to the crime, a senior police officer said. Investigations also revealed that the sergeant was on special duty at a musical concert in Agunukolapelessa, at the time of the commission of the crime.

The sergeant has been suspended and was scheduled to be produced in Court.
