Postal Dept cuts down Election costs to Rs. 950 Mn

The Postal Department has estimated the cost of the department to be Rs.950 million in relation to the Presidential Election.

The postal department had taken steps to reduce the amount of Rs.1400 million estimated by the department to Rs.950 million. Deputy Postmaster General Rajitha K. Ranasinghe said that after two discussions with the Elections Commission, the amount was revised according to a request to do so and the new revised estimate was submitted to the Elections Commission.

According to the Presidential Election Act, it is stated that the manifesto of a candidate running for the Presidential election should be sent to the voters’ homes free, which will cost an additional amount and that he will inform the Elections Commission about this.

He mentioned this at the press conference held at the Postal Department yesterday.

He also said: After the date of postal voting is announced, the packet containing the postal ballots will be taken from the returning officer and forwarded to the relevant officer. Then we will be ready to deliver to the voters’ residences, the voting cards. The relevant fleet of vehicles and employees have been prepared. A post office has been prepared to be established in the Elections Commission. At present, the acceptance of letters with the priority service label has begun. He said the rest of the work will commence after the nominations are completed.
